Chagall’s artistic stature has progressively augmented. He is now fully acknowledged as among the very greatest artists of the 20C.This is partly because he offers contemporary society a truly alternative expression of art and people, which in its sheer poetry and intensity of imagination continues to exert profound fascination, influence and inspiration.
Perhaps no painter since Rembrandt has so completely recreated the spirit of the Bible as Chagall does here in this series of etchings and lithographs. Certainly in the history of 20C art the series remains without precedent. It should be emphasised that Chagall has not chosen a doctrinal interpretation. The images and actions portrayed are charged with a collective symbolism. While celebrating the central humanity of the Bible this symbolism enables the work to encompass a rich universality. As Goethe observed nothing that is perishable can endure unless it is also a symbol. However it is the completely absorbing artistry of a great master, at the height of his expressive powers, in media propelling him to the depths of creative discovery which generates such compelling and exciting viewing.
