Anastasia was born in Oslo of Russian parents who had fled to Norway for safety during the Revolution. The Gestapo arrested her in 1942 and she was imprisoned in concentration camps in Germany. In 1944 she escaped to Switzerland.

After the war ended she returned to her childhood love of painting and drawing. She chose to study in France, first in Nice, and later Paris where she worked alongside Matisse. She continued her artistic career in Paris, focusing for a time on the Algerian War.

In 1962 she married John Greig, a Norwegian diplomat and accompanied him on all his tours of duty, visiting the Far East, including China, the Philipines, Manila, Indonesia, Turkey, London, Paris, and Mexico.

References to all these miriad experiences may be clearly traced in her fascinating and compassionate work.
