Thinker 2004
Pencil and watercolor 30 x 42 cm (11 3/4 x16 ½ in)
In Thinker, perhaps surprisingly, Tale combines his 'calligraphic' abstract art with a face characterised by notably enigmatic features, particularly the haunting eyes. These look out unblinkingly, with unfathomable expression, possibly at the viewer or perhaps beyond - both upwards and inwards.
The gaze, while neither aggressive nor passive seems to require an exchange of recognition from the viewer with whom, if only momentarily, it seems to lock?
The face emerges seamlessly from the 'stream of consciousness' thoughts, depicted emblematically by the flowing rhythm of the seemingly endless pencil lines.
This synthesis of calligraphic and figurative language is so subtly achieved. Once again extending the boundaries, Tale creates another source of imagery for the future.
